How to build credit from scratch without a starter-card trap

A secured card, on-time payments, and utilization under 10% beat five applications in a month.

One card that reports, used like a debit card

Start with a secured card from a bank you already use. Deposit $200–$500. Put one recurring bill on it and autopay in full.

Utilization and the five-application mistake

Keep reported balances under 10% of the limit. A $180 balance on a $200 card looks like 90% utilization. Apply for one product, use it, wait.

Authorized user: useful, not magic

Being added to a long-aged, well-paid family card can import history if the issuer reports authorized users. It will not save a file if you then miss payments on your own card.

Questions

Can I build credit with only a debit card?

No. You need an account that reports to the bureaus — typically a credit card or installment loan.

How fast can a new file become good?

Six to twelve months of on-time payments on one or two accounts, with low utilization.

Should I use a credit-builder loan?

A small credit-union builder loan that reports can add an installment line. Skip high-fee fintech versions.
